Flats Fishing
Unlike most coastal areas, Marathon, in the heart of the Florida Keys, offers the advantage of big game fishing just minutes instead of hours away. Experienced anglers and fishing novices alike enjoy Marathon's ideal location, which offers easy access to the Gulf of Mexico for backcountry and wreck fishing.
The Florida Key's backcountry consists of hundreds of islands "Keys" scattered amidst the biological rich waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Backcountry Keys, with a few exceptions, are pristine uninhabited islands.
For fishermen, this means great game fishing and an alternative option to fishing offshore in the Atlantic. Fly fishermen will enjoy fishing the nearby flats and backcountry where Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit await.
This fishing utilizes light-tackle or fly casting tackle and sight casting to a Bonefish, Permit or Tarpon, as they cruise the shallows in search of food. The captains pole the boats to the fish. Flat fishing requires a quiet approach and a delicate cast.
The captains love to teach you this fine art so don't be afraid to spend the day out there.
